Nose re-shaping: What is it?

Surgery to beautify the shape, size & appearance of your nose.

What is nose re-shaping?

Several different procedures can be used in nasal surgery (rhinoplasty) to improve the shape and appearance of the nose.

What nose re-shaping can do? It can make the nose or nostrils larger or smaller, straighten bumps on the bridge, alter the angle between nose and upper lip and change the shape of the nose tip.

What happens during treatment? As with any cosmetic treatment, you should consult a qualified plastic surgeon before deciding to go ahead. A nose operation can be performed under local or general anaesthetic. The surgeon will make an incision either inside the nostrils, in which case scars will be invisible; or through the base of the nose, between the nostrils, which will leave a very small scar which is not seen. The nasal bone and the cartilage which supports the lower part of the nose is re-shaped. The nose is then splinted and dressed.

When can you see the results?

The effects of rhinoplasty emerge very gradually. You won’t see the full result for at least three months, and the face can continue to alter for a year or more after the operation.

What are the Risks?

Possible post-operative complications include adverse reaction to anaesthetic, infection, bleeding. The skin may be slightly reddened, but this is very rare. Bruising, swelling and inflammation can last for two weeks or more after the operation.

Is it possible to get the new shape according to my choice?

NO. Everybody is having a unique proportions of his or her nose and it is never possible to get the new nose as per your wish or as that of your ‘favorite star’s nose’!

Can Silicone Implants help in nose shaping?

YES. They are used routinely fo giving proper shape to your nose.

How long does the rhinoplasty take? How many days will I be in the hospital? How long must I be bandaged?

Rhinoplasty, or nasal reconstruction, takes about one hour of surgical time. The patient has an average hospital stay of one to three days. Nasal dressings held in place by adhesive tape are removed from the nose 1 to 2 days after the operation. If I need a nose “lift,” an eyelid correction, and a face lift, which should I choose first to make me look younger? The degree of severity of all three conditions influences the decision in this dilemma. Also, the psychological trauma of the patient is of great consideration. Which of the three conditions does the patient dwell upon most often? Let us consider cosmetic nasal surgery first. If the patient has a very elongated and / or a very bony prominence, this physical defect destroys the symmetry of the face, which is the basis of our conception of beauty.

Creating an appealing symmetrical nose may not assure a face to launch a thousand ships, but it is a positive step in the right direction. Of particular value is the shortening of the drooping nasal tip. Cosmetic nasal tip surgery can take ten years off the aging face. The uptilt of the nose is symbolic of youth. It evokes a definite reaction that causes us to use words such as “cute, adorable, sweet”.

The male whose drooping nasal tip is given a more straight chiseled appealing in a masculine way. The second choice in this conundrum of facial plastic surgery is usually the eyelids. The viewer finds his eyes drawn to the baggy eyelids on the face of the person at whom he is looking or with whom he is conversing. Therefore, according to the severity of either of the conditions – the severely drooping nose or the baggy eyelids – the choice can be made. Both these corrections can be made during the same operative procedure depending upon the severity of the nasal deformity.

The face lift will also make the face appear younger and, if all the other features of the face are symmetrical and within the limits of attractiveness, the patient will have enhanced his or her beauty. Since the eyelid correction and face lift can be performed in one surgical procedure, this double-edged scalpel technique will give the patient improvement in two of three critical categories.

Should I show the plastic surgeon a photograph of someone whose nose shape I would like to have?

There is no objection to showing the plastic surgeon a photograph of a nose you would like, but this does not guarantee the result, for there are many factors that influence the outcome, such as the shape of the nose you start with, your particular features, your age, your height, and nature’s way of healing. Your plastic surgeon will order photographs of you on your first visit. You may be photographed in his office, or you may be sent to a professional photographer. The surgeon may decide to show you profile of your future face by drawing some lines over your photograph. However, the surgeon can never promise you the exact shape of nose he has outlined, but rest assured that he will give you the most pleasing result possible.

At what age can I have a rhinoplasty?

Most facial plastic surgeon are of the opinion that age seventeen is an ideal age for cosmetic plastic surgery. The young adult is usually fully grown in facial features and height, although there could still be some growth period in the later teens, especially with boys. The surgeon will make his evaluation after he has examined the patient.

Because of functional problems reconstructive nasal surgery is sometimes required much earlier than this ideal age, Some children have so much nasal obstruction to breathing that to await the middle teens would be harmful to their growth, physical and psychological. Lack of air to the lungs through the nasal passages can stunt the development of the lungs and chest. Mouth breathing, which usually accompanies this problem, influences the development of the shape of the palate. Limited surgery of the nasal septum is indicated these children to relieve obstruction to breathing, leaving the consideration of cosmetic appearance to a more appropriate age.
